Our project with Oakgrove Integrated Nursery School helped develop the fundamental movement skills of co-ordination, locomotion and balance in the nursery children (age 3-4yrs). Through fun games/activities we helped these young children gain confidence and self-esteem and enable them to feel the benefits of being healthy and active. Our leaders worked with the nursery pupils every Tuesday for 6 weeks.
Mrs Wilson (Nursery Teacher) said “Our nursery children really enjoyed taking part in the "Fundamental Movement” programme with the Oakgrove College students and Mrs Fletcher. During the 6 weekly sessions the children learned and developed many new skills to help develop their gross motor skills like throwing and catching beanbags and balls, jumping into hoops, running and hopping. They also learned to be part of a team working together during fun activities. The children’s' attention and listening skills improved over the weeks as they had to follow instructions from the students in order to know what the activities entailed. The children really enjoyed this programme and grew very attached to the students and Mrs Fletcher; it was a real novelty for them having this experience as well as being of great benefit to them.”
